I am not a therapist, but I have been to therapy. This was exquisite and I had to read it three times.🤩

Don't we all grow up with parents who have their own issues? Some issues are trivial, others are not.

Don't we all enter adult hood with a completely different set of tools? The emotional, behavioural, genetics, personality...

The only common thread is that we all have to interact with other humans no matter what childhood we had.

And from experience, interacting with other humans is a full time job. The processing, interpreting, misinterpreting, projecting, repairing. It is incredibly complicated.

I think that empathy and responsibility can co-exist. You can have compassion for why a person is the way they are without excusing the impact they have on the people around them. I love understanding others but I will not carry their emotional work.

Loved your article, Andie. 🧡

This resonated Andie. I grew up in a dysfunctional household. So I get this essay so much. For a long time I used it as crutch. It wasn’t until later in life that I took ownership. I can’t say the same for my siblings.

Great essay.
